1. Everyone (adults and
children) should have a physical examination by their doctor once a year.
2. The nurse will usually start the exam by
getting your weight (and height for children), temperature, pulse, and blood
pressure. When the nurse is done, they
will usually ask you for a urine sample.
3. The doctor will ask if you are having any
problems. Then they will check your
breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, ears, eyes, nose, and throat. A pediatrician will also usually do a vision
test and watch your child walk to make sure there aren’t any physical problems
with their bodies.
4. The last thing is usually blood work and
immunizations. Don’t forget to take your
immunization card with you! A nurse will
take samples of your blood and they will send the tubes off to a lab. If there are problems, you will probably have
to go back and do the tests again or go see a specialist. Children have to have a LOT of
immunizations. The doctor keeps up with
them on a chart and you will be required to show a copy of that chart to
register your child for school.
