Teaching Children American Manners

Raising kids is a LOT of work!  It’s even harder when you move to another country!  If you can follow the advice below, your children will be able to enjoy many things in America.   Here are some tips:

1. You are responsible for your children at all times.  If you aren’t able to watch your children, you need to designate someone else to watch them for you.  This is very important until about age 10—not just to make sure your children are behaving but also to keep them safe.

2.  If you go to someone’s house or a public place, don’t let your children climb on furniture/structures or run indoors.   Also, don’t let them eat or drink anywhere other than the designated eating area.

3.  If your children are eating at a restaurant or another person’s house, they should remain seated for the entire meal.  Before leaving the table, they should ask, “May I please be excused?”  When they have permission to leave the table, they should thank the person who cooked or paid for their meal.

4.  If adults are talking, children shouldn’t interrupt.  If there is an urgent matter, children can say “please excuse me” before speaking.

5.  If an adult asks a child a question, they should answer with “Yes, please”, “Yes ma’am/sir”, “No, thank you”, or “No ma’am/sir”.

6.  If you are in a public place with your children, you need to make sure their actions aren’t disturbing other people.  If your children are crying or having a tantrum, it’s usually best just to leave the area until they calm down.  This is especially true at restaurants and movie theaters.

7.  When your children are leaving someone’s house or a party, they should tell the adult in charge, “Thanks for inviting me.”

8.    If someone gives your child a gift, they should write a thank you note.  The note doesn’t have to be long, but it should express gratitude for the gift and the kindness of the giver.

Going To Get A Physical

1. Everyone (adults and children) should have a physical examination by their doctor once a year.

2.  The nurse will usually start the exam by getting your weight (and height for children), temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.   When the nurse is done, they will usually ask you for a urine sample.

3.  The doctor will ask if you are having any problems.  Then they will check your breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, ears, eyes, nose, and throat.   A pediatrician will also usually do a vision test and watch your child walk to make sure there aren’t any physical problems with their bodies.

4.  The last thing is usually blood work and immunizations.  Don’t forget to take your immunization card with you!  A nurse will take samples of your blood and they will send the tubes off to a lab.  If there are problems, you will probably have to go back and do the tests again or go see a specialist.   Children have to have a LOT of immunizations.  The doctor keeps up with them on a chart and you will be required to show a copy of that chart to register your child for school.

Sample questions the doctor may ask:

Do you have any concerns about your/your child’s health?

Do you take any medicine?  Does your child take any medicine?

Do you eat well?  Does your child eat well?

Have you been sick recently?  Has your child been sick recently?
